Moving to another country requires a lot of logistics, and that would just be for you getting there. If you’re going to another country and need to learn the language as well, that’s a whole other step. Not only do you have to go through the tedious relocation process itself, but you also have to adjust to a completely new lifestyle and culture.

Depending on where you are moving, the chances are that one of the biggest hurdles you will have to overcome is the new language barrier. Yes, English may be one of the most widespread languages of the world, but in order to be able to find a job in another country, communicate with locals, and lead an overall fulfilling life, you will need to learn the language of the country. Check out the following tips on how to tackle the language barrier when you are moving to another country.

  • Listen to the language. Do your best to be truly exposed to the language you are learning. Watch movies in that language, listen to music, and maybe even try to read a book. You could start with easier stuff, such as cartoons and books for kids, and gradually move on to more serious content. You could also subscribe to a magazine or a newspaper in that language.
  • Find a tutor. Once you move to another country, consider finding a tutor to teach you the language one-on-one. Tutoring is usually much more efficient than learning in a group, because it is completely tailored to your needs and capabilities. However, don’t assume that just because someone speaks a language, they can teach it. Try and find someone who has been trained to teach that language.
  • Talk to people. Reading books and watching movies will only get you so far. If you don’t actively use the language, you will never master it. Make a point of talking to someone in the new language at least several times every day. This could be a store clerk, a waiter at a restaurant, or a passenger on a bus.
  • Don’t be afraid of miscommunication. Misunderstandings or miscommunications are integral and necessary parts of learning and mastering a new language. If are worried you might embarrass yourself by mispronouncing a word, you will never feel at ease enough to master the language. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. They are just another great way to learn.
